How Often Should You Clean Your Windows?

It's one of those questions that sounds simple but doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer. The short version: for most homes in Canterbury and the surrounding areas, we recommend a clean every 4 to 8 weeks. But the right frequency for your property depends on a few things.

What Affects How Quickly Your Windows Get Dirty?

Location and surroundings. If your property backs onto a main road, a building site, or open farmland, your windows will pick up dust and grime faster than a house on a quiet residential street. Properties near the coast — like those in Whitstable or Herne Bay — also deal with salt spray, which leaves a cloudy film on glass if it's not cleaned regularly.

Trees and vegetation. Overhanging trees drop pollen, sap, and debris onto windows and sills. Homes in leafy areas like Sturry, Broad Oak, or Fordwich often need more frequent cleaning during spring and summer.

The weather. Kent gets its fair share of rain, and while rain itself doesn't dirty your windows, it does splash mud up from the ground and carry dust particles that dry on the glass. After a particularly wet or stormy spell, you'll notice your windows look worse, not better.

Property type. Ground-floor windows tend to get dirtier faster than upper floors because they're closer to road splash, garden mud, and general foot traffic.

A Rough Guide to Cleaning Frequency

Every 4 weeks — ideal for properties on busy roads, near the coast, surrounded by trees, or if you simply want your windows looking their best at all times. Also recommended for commercial premises where clean windows are part of your professional image.

Every 6 to 8 weeks — works well for most residential properties in Canterbury and the surrounding area. This keeps on top of dirt before it builds up and becomes harder to shift.

Every 12 weeks or longer — fine if your property is well sheltered and you're not particularly bothered about a bit of build-up between cleans. That said, leaving it much longer than this means dirt starts bonding to the glass and frames, making it harder to get a perfect finish when you do eventually clean.

Why Regular Cleaning Is Better Than the Occasional Deep Clean

It's tempting to think you can just get a big clean done once or twice a year and leave it at that. The problem is that dirt, hard water deposits, and organic growth (like algae on frames) build up over time and become progressively harder to remove. Regular cleaning (find more info here) prevents this cycle.

There's also a practical benefit: the first clean after a long gap always takes more effort and may cost more. Once you're on a regular schedule, each clean is quicker and more straightforward because there's less build-up to deal with.

What About Commercial Properties?

For shops, offices, restaurants, and other customer-facing businesses, we'd always recommend at least a monthly clean. Your windows are part of your first impression — nobody wants to walk into a business through a grubby shopfront. Some of our commercial clients in Canterbury city centre are on fortnightly cleans, especially those on busy high-traffic streets.

The Bottom Line

For most homes in Canterbury, Sturry, Whitstable, and Herne Bay, a clean every 4 to 8 weeks hits the sweet spot. It keeps your windows looking consistently good without being excessive.

If you're not sure what schedule makes sense for your property, get in touch and we'll recommend something based on your situation. We offer regular cleaning rounds across Canterbury and the surrounding area, and you can always adjust the frequency once you see how quickly your windows tend to get dirty.
