5 Signs Your Gutters Are Blocked

Blocked gutters are one of those problems that's easy to ignore until it causes real damage. Most people don't spend a lot of time looking at their guttering, so blockages can go unnoticed for months. By the time you spot the problem, water may already be getting where it shouldn't.

Here are five signs that your gutters might be blocked — and what to do about it.

1. Water Overflowing During Rain

This is the most obvious sign. If you can see water pouring over the edge of your gutters when it rains — rather than flowing along the gutter to the downpipe — something is blocking the flow. It might be a build-up of leaves and moss, or the downpipe itself could be clogged.

Even a small overflow can cause problems over time. Water running down your walls instead of through the drainage system leads to damp, staining, and in serious cases, damage to the brickwork and foundations.

2. Plants or Weeds Growing in the Gutter

If you can see weeds, grass, or even small plants sprouting from your gutters, that's a sure sign there's a thick layer of decomposed debris sitting up there — essentially a bed of compost. It means the gutters haven't been cleared in a long time and the blockage is significant.

This is more common than you'd think, especially on properties surrounded by trees. If you're in an area like Sturry, Broad Oak, or parts of Canterbury with mature gardens, leaf build-up can get out of hand quickly after autumn.

3. Sagging or Pulling Away from the Roofline

Gutters are designed to carry water, not hold standing debris and trapped water. When a blockage causes water and wet sludge to sit in the gutter, the extra weight can cause sections to sag, bow, or start pulling away from the fascia board.

If you notice your gutters don't look straight anymore, or you can see gaps appearing between the gutter and the roofline, it's worth getting them cleared and checked before the fixings fail completely. A collapsed gutter is a much more expensive problem than a routine clean.

4. Damp Patches or Staining on External Walls

If you're seeing damp patches, green algae streaks, or watermarks on your external walls — especially near the roofline or below the guttering — it's likely that water is overflowing or leaking from a blocked gutter and running down the wall.

Left untreated, this can lead to penetrating damp inside the property, mould growth in bedrooms and loft spaces, and damage to interior plaster and decoration. It's the kind of problem that starts small and escalates quickly.

5. Water Pooling Around Your Foundations

If you notice puddles forming around the base of your house after rain — in places where water doesn't normally collect — your gutters may not be draining properly. Instead of carrying rainwater to the downpipe and away from the building, a blocked gutter dumps it right next to the walls and foundations.

Over time, this can undermine foundations, cause subsidence, and lead to serious structural issues. It's one of the more severe consequences of neglected gutters, and one of the easiest to prevent with regular cleaning.

What Should I Do If I Spot These Signs?

Don't wait for the problem to get worse. Gutter blockages only build up over time, and the longer you leave them, the more risk there is of water damage to your property.

A professional gutter clean is quick, affordable, and far cheaper than dealing with damp repairs, foundation work, or replacing damaged gutters. We use a ground-level vacuum system to clear all debris from your gutters and downpipes, and we take before and after photos so you can see what was up there.

We recommend having your gutters cleaned at least once a year — ideally in late autumn after the leaves have fallen. If your property is surrounded by trees, twice a year is a safer bet.

Prevention Is Cheaper Than Repair

A routine gutter clean in Canterbury typically costs a fraction of what it costs to repair damp damage, replace rotten fascia boards, or fix a cracked foundation. It's one of the simplest bits of home maintenance you can do — and one of the most impactful.
