Is Pressure Washing Safe for Block Paving?

It's one of the most common concerns people have before booking a driveway clean: will pressure washing damage my block paving? The short answer is no — as long as it's done properly. The longer answer is worth reading, because there's a right way and a wrong way to do it.

What Can Go Wrong with DIY Pressure Washing

Most horror stories about pressure washing block paving come from DIY jobs with domestic machines and handheld lances. Here's what typically goes wrong.

Blasting out the jointing sand: This is the biggest issue. The sand between your blocks holds everything in place and stops weeds from taking root. A direct, high-pressure jet pointed straight at the joints will strip that sand out fast. Once the sand is gone, blocks start shifting and weeds move in quickly.

Uneven cleaning: Handheld lances clean in a narrow strip, which means you end up with visible lines and streaks across your driveway — sometimes called "zebra stripes". It looks worse than the original dirt in some cases.

Surface erosion: Holding the lance too close or using too much pressure on softer paving materials can etch the surface, rough it up, or even chip edges. This makes the blocks more porous and actually accelerates how quickly they get dirty again.

Splatter everywhere: Without a surface cleaner attachment, a handheld lance throws dirty water, moss, and debris in every direction — up your walls, over your car, across your neighbour's path.

How Professionals Do It Differently

Professional pressure washing of block paving looks very different from the DIY version.

Rotary surface cleaners: Instead of a handheld lance, we use a flat rotary surface cleaner — a wide disc that sits on the surface and contains the water jet inside a housing. This cleans evenly across a large area without the streaky lines, and it contains the splash so your walls and car stay clean.

Controlled pressure: Professional machines have adjustable pressure. We set it high enough to remove the dirt, algae, and moss, but not so high that it strips out all the jointing sand or damages the block surface. Getting this balance right is the key difference between a professional result and a DIY disaster.

Systematic approach: We work in overlapping passes to ensure even coverage, and we pay attention to the direction of cleaning to avoid pushing dirty water over areas we've already done.

Re-sanding: Even with controlled pressure, some jointing sand will inevitably be displaced during cleaning — it happens with rain too. That's why we re-sand the joints after cleaning. This restores the structural stability of the paving and helps prevent weeds from coming back.

What About Different Types of Block Paving?

Not all block paving is the same, and different materials need slightly different treatment.

Standard concrete blocks are the most common type in Canterbury and handle pressure washing well. They're hard-wearing and can take a thorough clean without issues.

Tumbled or aged-effect blocks have a deliberately roughened surface. They need a slightly lighter touch to avoid smoothing out the textured finish.

Clay pavers are denser and more durable, but the jointing sand between them can be more easily displaced because the edges are smoother.

Resin-bound driveways aren't block paving, but they're common enough to mention. They need a lower pressure and a different technique to avoid lifting the resin surface. We adjust our approach accordingly.

Whatever type you have, the principle is the same: match the pressure and technique to the material. That's something a professional gets right and a hired pressure washer from the hardware store doesn't account for.

Will My Driveway Look Like New Afterwards?

In most cases, the results are dramatic. Years of moss, algae, dirt, and weathering come off to reveal the original colour and texture of the blocks underneath. People often forget what colour their driveway actually was.

That said, expectations should be realistic. Very old or heavily stained paving may not return to its original colour completely — oil stains, for example, can be significantly reduced but may leave a faint shadow. And if blocks have been chipped or cracked, cleaning will make them more visible rather than less. But for the vast majority of driveways, the transformation is striking.

How Often Should Block Paving Be Pressure Washed?

Once a year is enough for most driveways. This keeps on top of moss, algae, and weed growth before it gets out of hand. Properties with heavy tree cover, north-facing driveways, or shaded areas may benefit from a clean every 6 to 12 months.

After cleaning, applying a post-treatment biocide can slow regrowth and keep the surface looking cleaner for longer between washes.

The bottom line

Pressure washing is perfectly safe for block paving — the problems only arise when it's done badly. Professional equipment, the right technique, and re-sanding afterwards make all the difference between a driveway that looks like new and one that looks worse than when you started.
